Methods for dynamic analysis of structures in the frequency domain have recently received more attention. This has been mainly a result of the growing interest in soil-structure interaction effects on the dynamic response of nuclear power plants and other important structures. It is now generally accepted that the response of a structure to a specific earthquake may be affected by this interaction. Finite element methods are a powerful tool for the analysis of complex soil-structure systems. However, a very large number of elements has to be considered in order to obtain accurate results. As a consequence, most works on the subject have considered a substructure approach, analyzing separately the soil continuum and the structure. This reduces the total amount of work {mainly because a more efficient node numbering results in a reduction of total bandwidth}, allows for better modeling of the structure and for a much easier reanalysis if some changes in the structure have to be considered, and, at least for some very simplified models, permits the use of some available analytical solutions. In addition, this approach simplifies the specification of the earthquake input at the foundation level.
