The objective was to determine the association between knowledge and hygienic practices in food handling in mothers with children under 5 years old attended in the area of the San Juan Health Center of the city of Iquitos during the year 2017.El Method used was the quantitative and the non-experimental design of correlational and transversal type. The population was 300 mothers. The sample was 168 mothers assigned by probabilistic sampling stratified with equal affixation. The techniques were the interview, the direct observation and the home visit, the instruments: Questionnaire (Validity 88.1% and reliability of 97.8%), and the observation guide (Validity 97.8% and reliability 83.0%). The data were analyzed with the SPSS 22.0 program. The inferential statistical test was Chi Square (X 2), with α = 0.05 and 95% confidence level. The results are as follows: Of the 100.0% (168) mothers with children under 5 years old, 70.2% (118) have knowledge about hygiene in the correct food handling, and 83.3% (140) have practices Hygienic in food handling, inadequate. Values of p> 0.05 p = 0.880 allowed to reject the hypothesis raised: Mothers with knowledge about correct food manipulation performed hygienic practices of adequate food handling, while mothers with knowledge about handling of incorrect foods performed hygienic food handling practices.
