This research exposes the identification of the attitudes of families with a child with Down Syndrome regarding the disability and capacity that the child presents. The participants were families with a member with Down Syndrome residents in the city of Cusco. The methodology was used qualitative methodology with a phenomenological approach, data collection was done through semi-structured interviews. The results are organized into four subcategories, among which are the subcategory of affective impact and state of confusion that includes the attitudes of frustration regarding the situation information and weakened family ties, on the other hand the family support subcategory that encompasses the attitudes of acceptance and strengthening family ties, also the subcategory of coping with the conditions implied by disability which includes attitudes to discover capacities, family responsibility, expectations and motivation in the face of new experience and strengthening coping strategies and finally the defense subcategory against stigmatization of disability that encompasses the attitudes of protection of the rights of minors and sensitivity and social empathy. It was concluded that the attitudes that the family with a member with Down Syndrome takes towards disability and ability, are influenced by beliefs and social constructs, likewise, the family's attitudes were of great significance for life of the minor with Down Syndrome and for the family as a whole, since their optimal development and general well-being depend on this.
