The objective of this work was to determine the relationship between sarcopenia and phase angle in patients with chronic kidney disease on hemodialysis from three clinics in Lima. Handgrip strength, 4-meter walk test, short physical performance test, skeletal muscle mass, and phase angle measured by electrical bioimpedance were evaluated. Sarcopenia was diagnosed according to European Working Groupon Sarcopenia in Older People criteria and patients were grouped according to phase angle > 4.6° and ≤ 4.6°. There was the participation of 114 patients on hemodialysis and the average age of the patients was 53.8 years, the male sex was the most predominant with 55.3%, the most predominant etiology in the sample was high blood pressure with 36% and diabetes mellitus type II with 33.3%. 91.2% of the patients had sarcopenia and the phase angle had an average of 5.77°, of which 15.8% had a decreased phase angle and 84.2% had a normal phase angle. Cramer's V correlation coefficient was applied, the correlation found between sarcopenia and the phase angle was 0.344, determining a weak positive relationship, the exact significance was 0.005, reaffirming what was found in Fisher's exact test of a relationship between variables. In conclusion, the phase angle is an important and simple parameter to evaluate, which is related to sarcopenia. Further studies are required to establish cause-effect between phase angle and sarcopenia in patients on hemodialysis.
