Dairy farming aims to maximize milk production volumes and decrease production costs. The improvement in productive yields is achieved by selecting the best animals for breeding purposes (bulls and cows). The aim of this research work was to determine the genetic profile of Holstein bulls, which are selected by dairy farmers in the central coast of Peru. For this, the owners and managers of the dairy farms were interviewed to identify and determine the main criteria considered for the selection of frozen semen of the bulls used. Information was collected from the progeny tests of the bulls used in the years 2021-2022 by each farm to identify similarities in the characteristics of the bulls used. Much similarity was found between the characteristics preferred by the farmers for the selection of bulls due to the similarities between farms in the management and destination of the milk produced. What the breeder seeks to improve is not always what they buy, which is reflected in the difference between the values of the bulls used for the AI versus the desired values for his improvement objectives. Likewise, the price paid by farmers per straw of imported frozen semen is relatively low, which is an indication that the price of semen determines the selection criteria. All the farmers sought to improve the type and udder in their cows; the latter to improve the fat and protein indices due to the change in the payment formula by the dairy industry.
