The present study's general objective is to describe how cognitive learning strategies favor academic motivation in students of the descriptive statistics and probabilities course of the Professional School of Systems Engineering at a Private University of Lima, in 2020 - II. For this, a sample consisting of 25 students of the mathematics course III belonging to the professional school of systems engineering at a private university in Lima in the period, 2020 - II, has been selected. Likewise, students attend the cycle in the semi-face-to-face modality, via virtual platform at night, students of both sexes whose ages fluctuate between 25 and 60 years. The research presents a qualitative approach, descriptive in scope and phenomenological design. The results reveal that students apply cognitive learning strategies in different ways. It is concluded that students apply cognitive learning strategies, but do not specify how these activities motivate them, however, the results of the motivation variable reveal that students have extrinsic and above all intrinsic motivation
