The present work arises as a solution proposal to the need to reduce the losses due to defective products of a powder medicine packaging line with a capacity of 3000 units per hour of a Peruvian pharmaceutical laboratory and thereby increase the inherent availability and the line productivity. The maintenance strategy used in the packaging line was preventive maintenance 60% and corrective maintenance 40%. These strategies resulted in losses due to defective products, untimely stops of machines in process and delays in the delivery of production batches. Although it is true that the current maintenance strategy is applied to all the production lines of the plant, it has been noted after an analysis of the failures of the powder packaging line that the failure rate due to equipment misoperation and catastrophic failure in equipment components is high, due to this, optimization strategies are needed that involve with greater emphasis the equipment operator in maintenance tasks, since immediate maintenance access to the line is restricted due to policies and regulations, which may take time up to 40 minutes, likewise, the criteria for changing equipment components must be improved, so it was decided to improve the maintenance of the powder packaging line following the guidelines for autonomous maintenance and systematic preventive maintenance that are part of the methodology of Total Productive Maintenance. The application of improvements to the maintenance of the powder packaging line resulted in an increase in inherent availability, an increase in productivity and a decrease in losses due to defective products of S/210,600.00, which represents a reduction of 61%.
