Safety Engineers know that everybody recognizes that Leadership is a competence that all workers in the mine should have. The way in which we have communicated the concepts related to Leadership has contributed to the misunderstanding of this concept for mining safety, making this a paradigm, with all the burdens that it entails. In the present academic work the reorganization of the criteria and concepts about Leadership is proposed and the development and the diffusion of the figure of Circumstantial Leadership at Poracota Mine of Compañía de Minas Buenaventura S.A.A. is described. Traditionally in our country, the term Leadership is focused from the point of view of people who have a definition of “Leader“ aligned with the traditional orthodox, exclusionary and paradigmatic one, which is deeply rooted in all levels of our society and our culture, which confers a lot of characteristics and attributes for these people, most of which are alien to the common people and, therefore, the common mining workers, so the most part of them are voluntarily and conscientiously exempt themselves from the role of leader by believing themselves that they do not have some of the many attributes that traditionally it is said that a leader must have. For the average mining worker, most of these requirements or attributes seem unattainable to him or her, because he thinks that all this attributes belong to other people. At Poracota mine, was conceived the idea to modify the orthodox point of view from which the Leadership is commonly focused, and a program of dissemination and application of Circumstantial Leadership was developed from July 2010 and through 2011. The accident rate in Poracota in 2009 was 1.39, in 2010 was 0.81, in 2011 was 0.35 and in 2012 was 0.24, but in 2013 was 38.25. Since july 2010, in Poracota we began to promote the Circumstantial Leadership of workers in general, the result obtained was a consequence of the work done and the conviction that gradually was generated within the population of mining workers of Poracota mine of Compañia de Minas Buenaventura S.A.A. In the first half of 2012 Poracota continued to work with the implemented criteria, to gradually leave them aside because of the entry of another Safety Program Manager, who brought other more “orthodox“ ways of seeing things. Poracota mine won the 4th Prize, at the national level in the 15th Annual ISEM Safety Competition of 2011 and also in 2012, which awards the mining companies with better statistical results and lower accident rates along the country. The results allow deducing that the implemented was reflecting important results. In this endeavor, the first thing that has to be achieved is the change in the mentality of safety engineers and then the mentality of operations supervisors, in that order of priorities, to achieve the goals that are pursued. This means changing the safety culture of the most important segment of the human group involved in mining: the people who manage the business and who must have control of the processes, and those are big words.
