Eating disorders are health problems that affect the individual physically, mentally, and socially. This literature review aims to explore what factors predispose college students to develop eating disorders in the United States. This literature review employed a precise search strategy on factors predisposing female college students to eating disorders, which included detailed exclusion and inclusion criteria that were applied to relevant health databases. Ten articles were selected for analysis. A thematic analysis was used to dissect the main findings and then critically present them. The results show three main influential factors. The first is emotion control. Students use food intake as a way of controlling negative emotions and circumstances. The second is the view of society. Societal norms have a great influence on students' lives and the stigmatization of eating disorders complicates the early diagnosis of eating disorders. The third is the influence of food insecurity. Students who are food insecure are more likely to develop an eating disorder.
