Self-efficacy is the ability to refuse situations in which one does not want to participate (Bandura, 1977); and coping strategies are particular actions to respond to certain situations (Carver, Sheier y Weintraub, 1989). The main objective of this research is to analyze the relationship between self-efficacy and coping strategies in university students who consume alcoholic beverages in a group of students between 18 and 23 years of the first two years of studies (N = 200). The Alcohol Consumption Questionnaire developed by Arana (2013) was used; the Self-efficacy and Resistance Questionnaire (Flórez- Alarcón, 2001); and the adaptation of Cassaretto and Chau (2016) of the Coping Estimation Questionnaire (COPE) developed by Carver et al. (1989). The results indicated that Self-efficacy presents a significant and positive relationship with the strategy of positive Re-interpretation and acceptance, as well as a significant and negative relationship with denial and use of substances. Regarding the first specific objective, significant differences were found between characteristics of alcohol consumption according to the sociodemographic and academic variables. Second, no differences were found between Self-efficacy and alcohol consumption. Finally, a significant relationship was evidenced between the focus and release emotions strategy and the use of another psychoactive substance in addition to alcohol; and the group of light and moderate users according to the strategy of focusing and releasing emotions, religious coping and substance use.
