Currently, the construction industry is one of the biggest responsible for climate change, which positions it as the main threat to the environment. After becoming aware of the significant negative impact it generates, efforts were increased in the application of sustainable practices in order to mitigate or offset these impacts. Although some studies have explored the implementation of sustainable practices in the construction sector, there is still little research on the adoption of a certification system such as LEED, for the inclusion of that practices in the construction of buildings in Peru. The present investigation analyzed the derived effects from the greening of a building through the LEED certification; furthermore, it has done the analysis of the resources used in the construction of a conventional building, to finally determine in a comparative way the environmental performance of the building in its two versions; conventional and green. The research design, because there is no control group, was pre-experimental quantitative. The data analysis was performed with the measurement of the environmental performance variable of the study unit and with the variable obtained from the application of the basic criteria prescribed in the LEED v4 BD + C guide to the same unit. The most significant findings from the application of sustainable practices through the LEED certification system encompass significant savings in energy and water; as well as the optimization of the life cycle phases of recycled materials. Specifically, it was observed that the greening of a building significantly reduces negative impacts on the environment, thus achieving sustainable construction.
