Objective: To determine the factors related to the visual prognosis of patients with penetrating ocular trauma associated with intraocular foreign body from posterior segment (CEIO) at the National Institute of Ophthalmology in January 1999 to December 2005. To describe the clinical epidemiology of patients with penetrating ocular trauma with posterior segment of the presence CEIO in the period January 1999 - December 2005 Design: Retrospective, descriptive analytical cross. Methods: A retrospective study of ninety cases CEIO sixty-nine patients underwent extraction CEIO during the period January 1999 - December 2005 at the National Institute of Ophthalmology of Perú (INO). Best corrected visual acuity was the final main outcome measure. The association between visual outcome variable and several preoperative, operative and post operative were analyzed statistically. Results: The age at presentation was 29 years, the most affected age group of 15-40 years 74% male (95.4%), most important mechanism hammering metal against metal 32%, explosive devices 26%, and primary diagnostic method was diagnostic ultrasound (89%). CEIO represent the 90% of cases. The most significant clinical findings: vitreous hemorrhage (48%), corneal wound (43), traumatic cataract (27%), Uvea prolapsed (24%), wound corneoescleral (17%), retinal detachment (15%). The surgical procedure performed Vitrectomy (76%), evisceration (12%). The evolution of surgery applied retina 42.3%, and retinal detachment (RD) Vitreoretinal proliferation (VRP) (23.9%), PVR (9.9%) macular proliferation (4.2%).
