Objective: To evaluate the relationship between gastric acid suppressor drugs (GASD) exposure and Community-acquired pneumonia (CAP) diagnosis in patients older than 65 years who were hospitalized in Medicine ward of “Hospital Nacional Arzobispo Loayza” during January 2015. Methods: 136 hospitalized patients were studied, information was collected about suppressors gastric acidity drugs consumption and Community Acquired Pneumonia diagnosis from medical records. Results: CAP diagnosis obtained 14 (10.3%), medical prescriptions for GASD obtained: Gastric Protection 28 (53%), Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease 12 (23%), Gastroduodenal Ulcer 7 (13%), other pathologies 6 (11%). GASD exposure obtained: exposed 53 (39%) and no exposed 83 (61%).GASD type obtained: proton pump inhibitor (PPI) 32 (60%) receptor antagonist histamine type 2 (AR2) 21 (40%). Difference of proportions for CAP diagnosis among exposed patients and unexposed to GASD with α = 0.05 was 11.0% ± 5.8%. Significant relationship was found for NAC diagnosis with GASD exposure and duration of GASD administration; while, no significant relationship was found for NAC diagnosis with dose of drug administration and type of GASD. Conclusions: Prevalence for NAC was 10.3 %. The most used GASD were PPIs with a percentage of 60%. There is a relationship between GASD exposure and diagnosis of NAC. There is a relationship between the duration of GASD management and diagnosis of NAC. Keywords: Community acquired pneumonia, Gastric acid suppressor drugs, Older people.
