The current research is a descriptive and retrospective study, which aimed to identify and to determine the factors associated with edentulism and some characteristics of edentulous patients diagnosed in the clinic of the Odontology Faculty of the San Marcos Major National University, Lima, Peru during the years 2005 to 2007. It was found that the majority of patients (36%) were in the age range of 17 to 32 years and most of them (59%) were female. The procedence for most of them (40%) was Lima traditional, the working status in the majority (34%) were housewives and employees, and the level of education found in most of them (52%) was a higher level of education . In regard to edentulism, the highest percentage of teeth pieces lost corresponded to the molars (51%), followed by premolars (33%); while the teeth pieces with indication of exodontias, mostly correspond to the molars (43%) followed by premolars (26%). The most frequent Kennedy classification for the superior maxilla was Class III (45%) and Class III without modification was the most common (42%), followed by Class III modification 1 (38%) and for inferior maxilla was the Class I (41%) and Class I without modifications the most common (68%) followed by Class I modification 1 (27%). After determining associated factors it was obtained that age, educational attainment and occupation were associated significant factors; differing of sex or place of residence. Finally, it was not found total inferior edentulism, whereas it was found total superior edentulism and total edentulism superior and inferior, which together totalized only 10 patients (6%).
