The present project consists of an instrumented safety system for the detection of hydrocarbon gases focused on an oil refinery. The project presents a novel architecture based on wireless gas detectors with SIL 2 certification and communication via ISA100.11a protocol. These are integrated through Yokogawa's wireless network infrastructure consisting of access points, media converters and gateways. Secure system communication is achieved with the PROFIsafe functional safety protocol, through which gas detectors will communicate with Yokogawa's safety controller, Prosafe-RS. The PROFIsafe certified protocol follows an approach specified in the IEC 61508 standard, called “black channel”, by which the physical communication medium is ignored and does not affect the security functions of the protocol, thanks to this the integrity of the transmitted data. is maintained securely, thereby maintaining SIL 2 certification despite being transmitted over a wireless physical medium. In conclusion, the designed system takes the advantages of wireless sensors, ensures the integrity of the data through a functional safety protocol, and the SIL 2 certification guarantees the mitigation of the risks associated with the potential presence of explosive atmospheres in the refineries.
