Background: The problematic use of social networks can generate problems at a relational level, especially in family dynamics, self-perception and factors related to self-esteem in specific groups such as young adults. Aims: The main objective of this research was to determine the relationship between social networks and self-esteem in students from private universities in Metropolitan Lima. Method: The type of study was cross-sectional descriptive-correlational. The sample was made up of 296 university students, 65.2% were women and 34.8% men, aged between 18 and 29 years (M = 21.53; SD = 3.340). The instruments that were applied were the Social Media Addiction Questionnaire and the Stanley Coopersmith Self-Esteem Inventory, which was adapted in Peru by Lachira (2013). Results: the existence of correlations between the dimensions of addiction to social networks was evidenced. and the components of self-esteem. In addition, moderate and large differences were identified according to connection pattern and according to gender in most dimensions. Conclusions: The findings respond to a mainly inverse relationship between self-esteem and addiction to social networks. The differences were mainly in addiction to social networks in university students; where the people who score higher on the ARS dimensions are usually connected for more than six hours a day. Women score higher on the addiction dimensions and men on the self-esteem dimensions.
