Concrete is one of the most widely used materials in construction, and we are always looking to improve its qualities and try not to raise its cost too much. At the same time, plastics such as PET used in the manufacture of beverage bottles and food containers represent a serious environmental problem, since they are discarded in large quantities and, given their properties, are slow to degrade. Therefore, in this research we propose the use of recycled PET fibers as an addition to concrete, with the objective of improving the mechanical qualities of concrete and making use of a discarded, abundant and polluting material. There have been multiple investigations on concrete with PET admixture, both nationally and internationally. In these investigations, PET plastic has been used in different forms: straight sheets, flakes and shredded. However, most of these investigations showed unfavorable results, where the mechanical capacities (compression, tensile and flexural) of this concrete are lower than those of plain concrete. This thesis work aims to study the effect of the shape and surface of concrete fibers on their mechanical properties. For this purpose, we analyzed predecessor research on the subject. Then, we elaborated concrete with recycled PET fibers, with three types of fibers: smooth straight, smooth zigzag and rough zigzag; in two dosages, 4 kg and 8 kg of fibers per cubic meter of concrete, with which we expect to achieve a better bond between the fibers and the cementitious matrix, therefore, a concrete with better mechanical capacities. Mechanical tests of compression and traction to cylinders and bending to beams were also carried out; from these tests we can highlight that better results were obtained in the concrete with zigzag fibers compared to the concrete with smooth straight fibers. Finally, we carried out the design according to the technical standard of plain concrete and we propose a design with zigzag and rough PET fibers in the dosages we used, as well as a cost analysis of this concrete with fibers.
