to evaluate sarcopenia as a factor associated with postoperative morbidity in patients with active gastric cancer. Materials and methods: a systematic review was conducted in 3 databases, the author of this research and an independent collaborator performed the search, evaluation and data extraction of each article that met the inclusion criteria. The aim is to identify postoperative complications. Then, an exhaustive analysis of the selected articles was made. Results: we analyzed 427 articles, of which 7 were included in our systematic review. According to the qualitative analysis, all articles confirmed the prevalence of sarcopenia in adults older than 65 years. Zhang et al, in their research shows that the association of sarcopenic and obesity are factors of worst prognosis for postoperative complications. Other studies concluded that decreased BMI (body mass index) in patients with sarcopenic was at higher risk for postoperative complications. In the selected studies sarcopenic was evaluated by computed tomography at the level of the L3 vertebra. Dong Q, Zhang W and Mao C observed that the most frequent postoperative complication is intra-abdominal infection. Regarding non-surgical complications, the authors Dong Q, Zhang W, Wang S, and Chen F agreed that patients with sarcopenic were at higher risk for pneumonia. Finally, it was concluded that patients diagnostic. Conclusions: Sarcopenia is associated with postoperative morbidity. Sarcopenia is considered an independent predictor of postoperative complications in patients with active gastric cancer.
