To determine if there is a relationship with respect to the pre pregnancy maternal body mass index on low birth weight in pregnant women with HBT in the period 2017-2019. Material and methods: A retrospective observational cohort study was carried out in which 254 pregnant women were included, according to selection criteria, which were divided into 3 groups: according to decreased body mass index (<18.5kg/m2), normal (18.5kg /m2- 24.9kg/m2), or high (>24.9kg/m2); applying the Pearson correlation coefficient and the chi-square statistical test. Results: There is a positive and significant relationship between the pre pregnancy body mass index and birth weight (p<0.05), the distribution according to birth weight in pregnant women with low body mass index was: low birth weight (100%); with normal body mass index was: low birth weight (1%); normal (92%) and macrosomic (7%), with high body mass index was: normal (18%) and macrosomic (82%), there are significant differences in the frequency of multiparity, anemia, delivery via cesarean section and preterm delivery among pregnant women with decreased, normal or high BMI (p<0.05). Conclusion: There is a directly proportional relationship between pre pregnancy maternal weight and low birth weight
