Objetive: Determine if there is an association between nuchal cord and asphyxia neonatorum in newborns by vaginal delivery at Hospital Belén de Trujillo. Material and Method: An observational, cross-sectional, retrospective, analytical study with cohort design was carried out. The study population was formed by 8007 newborns in vaginal delivery, who were divided into 2 groups: with nuchal cord (n = 267) and without nuchal cord (n = 7967). Results: The incidence of asphyxia neonatorum in newborns with nuchal cord was 3.30%. Asphyxia neonatorum was significantly higher in nuchal cord group (RR: 2.6 95% CI: 1.83 - 7.17, p <0.01). Demographic and obstetric features were similar in neonates with and without nuchal cord (p> 0.05). There were significant differences in respiratory resuscitation (p <0.01), hospitalization (p <0.01), Apgar at the minute (p <0.01) and Apgar at 5 minutes (p <0.05) among newborns with and without cord. Conclusions: Nuchal cord is a risk factor for asphyxia neonatorum in vaginal delivery. There is an association of respiratory resuscitation, hospitalization, Apgar to the minute and to the 5 minutes with the presence of nuchal cord; when compared to the group without nuchal cord.
