Objective: To determine whether the platelet distribution width(PDW) is a suitable marker of severity of acute appendicitis in patients who were attended in Victor Lazarte Echegaray Hospital, Trujillo during April-August 2019. Material and methods: This cross-sectional study included 145 patients who were >14 years old and according to histopathology reports patients were divided in two groups: Complicated acute appendicitis(AAC) and uncomplicated acute apendicitis (AAnC) Results: There was no statistically significant difference in PDW between patients with complicated acute appendicitis and uncomplicated acute appendicitis (p=0.760). The PDW cut-point ≥15.1fL in predicting complicated acute appendicitis has a sensitivity of 52.5%, specificity 52.3%, a positive predictive value of 57.5% and a negative predictive value of 47.2 %. Conclusions: The PDW is not useful as a marker of prediction of severity in acute appendicitis.
