Blue shark, Prionace glauca, is the most landed shark species worldwide. In Peru, the blue shark is captured as target species in small-scale vessels with longlines as main fishing gear. Likewise, it is often captured as associated fauna in driftnets targeting other shark species. This context places the blue shark as the most landed shark species, representing 42% of total sharks landed in Peru. However, despite its fishery importance, the ecological role that this species might have in Peruvian waters remains unknown. Therefore, the present study aimed to analyze the diet of blue sharks captured in northern Peru through stomach contents analysis, and the assessing of diet variability by sex, size class, and fishing grounds (Latitude and Longitude). A total of 121 stomach contents from individuals between 110.0 and 299.4 cm TL were recollected by onboard observers whose departure points were Mancora and Salaverry landing points. The results indicates that blue sharks have epipelagic and meso-bathypelagic feeding habits, feeding upon a wide number of preys (42 species) but with a diet dominated by Argonauta spp. (54.5 %IRI), Ancistrocheirus lesueurii (12.8 %IRI), and Gonatus antarcticus (7.1 %IRI). Likewise, blue shark was considered a top predator (TP = 4.4) with a specialist strategy (Ba = 0.05). Finally, ontogenetic shifts in the diet and feeding strategies of blue sharks were observed. As a result, the present study contributes with relevant basic information for future designs of trophic models that aim to implement ecosystem-based fisheries management plans in Peru.
