The objective of the present work was to evaluate the flaxseed oil as the source of the polyunsaturated fatty acids on the expression of the PPARα gene and the lipid profile in obese rats. Twenty four male Holtzman rats were used. The first 30 days, rats were induced to obesity with an obesogenic diet. After this first stage, the lipid profile and the Lee index were measured to verify that rats were obese. On the second stage (59 days), rats were randomly assigned to the treatments, which consisted of an obesogenic control diet and the obesogenic diet supplemented with flaxseed oil. After this second stage, the lipid profile and the relative expression levels of the PPARα gene in the liver were measured in obese rats. There was an increase in the concentration of c-HDL, a decrease in triglyceride levels and an increase in the expression of the PPARα gene in the rats fed the diet supplemented with flaxseed oil compared to the control but without significant differences between treatments.
