After the 2007-2008 financial crisis, a current of research emerged that was concerned about the role of financial variables and their impact on economic activity. In this regard, measures emerged to synthesize the information of the financial variables in a single indicator that they called the financial cycle. Among the main properties of this indicator is that it serves to predict financial crises. In this research, a methodology has been proposed in which the participation of each series that makes up the financial cycle can be determined. Likewise, the impact of the financial cycle on the economic cycle has been evaluated through a quantile regression. The results show that the financial cycle has useful information to predict future movements in the economic cycle in expansionary and recessive phases of the economic cycle. The greatest impact is observed in the expansionary phases of the economic cycle: the 1% increase in the financial cycle also generates an economic cycle increase of 7.0%. This result implies that macroprudential policies should monitor the financial cycle in times of economic boom and reduce its trend because it could trigger a financial crisis.
