This work performs the design and implementation of a DCS (Distributed Control System) that, using an OPC (OLE for Process Control) server, allows the vertical integration between Rockwell and Siemens’ equipment. The designed and implemented DCS allows the implementation simultaneously of equal or different control strategies in the equipment of Rockwell and Siemens previously mentioned. To verify the DCS’s correct operation, it used the following control strategies: flow ratio control, cascade control, and decentralized control. The control strategies’ implementation has shown that DCS can supervise and monitor different equipment brands using one computer. Using a SCADA (Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition) system and an OPC server, the user can monitor and supervise the equipment processes through the change of control parameters and see the performance of the control strategies implemented. The comparison between the data extracted of Siemens’ equipment through the DCS implemented and its development program, TIA Portal, presented a greater error in level processes than temperature processes, but this not generated any problem in the implementation of the control strategies. This work was implemented in the Automation Lab of UTEC.
