The objective of the research was to determine the relationship between orthography and academic performance in the area of communication in 6th grade students of a private school in the district of Barranco, Lima, Perú. The sample consisted of 70 girls between 11 and 12 years old. The study was of descriptive level and non experimental correlational design. The Test de Rendimiento Ortográfico (TRO) of Dioses (2002) was used to analyze the orthography variable. The results determined that there was no relationship between orthography and academic performance in the area of Communication (r= 0.148; p > 0.05); neither were significant relationships found with literal orthography (r= -0.019; p < 0.05) and with accentual orthography (r= 0.097; p < 0.05); however, a significant relationship (r= 0.275; p < 0.05) was identified with punctual orthography and academic performance in the area of Communication. The analysis of the results highlights 1) The complexity of academic performance in the area of Communication; 2) The importance of visual memory stimulation for literal orthography; 3) The eventual presence of a common factor between textual construction and punctual orthography, which could lie in the capacity for structuring thought and communication.
