Introduction: The arteriovenous fistula is the vascular access of choice in patients with terminal chronic kidney disease who require hemodialysis, which is not free of complications, means between 18 to 20% of hospital admissions. Objective: To determine the factors associated with the complications of arteriovenous fistulas in Adolfo Guevara Velasco National Hospital, Cusco, 2017. Material and Methods: A non-experimental, descriptive, cross-sectional, retrospective and correlational study, conducted at Adolfo Guevara Velasco National Hospital during the period January to December 2017, in 64 patients who met the selection criteria. A review of clinical histories and direct interview with the patient was performed for the complementary filling of data, a database was entered, the SPSS 24 version was used for data processing, with descriptive and basic inferential statistics. Results: The largest age group were under 60 years old with 70.3%, being 60.9% of the male gender. The most used fistula was autologous, with the proximal location (brachiocephalic) with 50.0%, the maturation time was greater than 1 month with 93.75%, 92.2% of patients started hemodialysis without prior creation of the fistula. The most frequent complication of the fistula was Ischemia with 34.4% followed by Thrombosis with 29.7%. The factors associated with fistula complications were age older than 60 years and diabetes mellitus with risk of ischemia (p = 0.027, OR = 3.4, 95% CI [1.11-10.50] and (p = 0.000, OR = 134.3, 95% CI [15.18-188.67]), dyslipidemia with risk of stenosis (p = 0.000, OR = 13.8, 95% CI [3.29-57.86]) and distal location with risk of stenosis (p = 0.026, OR = 3.8, IC95 % [1.12-12.5]). Conclusions: The most used fistula was autologous and brachycephalic localization, age over 60 years and diabetes mellitus are an important factor associated with ischemic fistula and the more immature the fistula, the greater the risk of infection.
