The objective of this research was to understand the perception of research competencies in teachers at a private university in Lima. The research was qualitative with a phenomenological design. The type of sampling was non-probabilistic for convenience, 15 professors who teach the research course, and 17 professors who don’t, participated. An interview and focus group guide were applied. In conclusion, it was found that the professor who teaches the research course has a better command of research skills. Regarding organizational competencies, better management in the group of professors who teach the research course, these were the methodological foundations, the performance of financing accounts and advice on financing. In the communication competence, the differences were more noticeable, with the professor who teaches the research subject dominating participation in research events, preparation/publication of educational material, and participation in learning communities. In the aspect of collaborative competence, the domain was balanced; however, due to their own role as a researcher, the organization of research events, participation as a jury and participation in academic networks was more frequent in the group of professors who teach research.
