Over the past decades, it has been clear that Peruvian economy is highly correlated to and influenced by the mining sector and its development. Whenever the international price of mining metals is increasing, the GDP shows a significant recovery. As the mining is vital for the Peruvian economy, it brings a lot responsibility with all different stakeholders, that goes from Peruvian Central Government to local communities included in the influence area, and even it reaches us as a society. Given the extraction, production and transportation activities carried out by mining companies, there are environmental risks that can cause tragedies if not monitored and managed properly. That is why, there are different regulations which allow to restrict and then monitor and measure all risky activities that are carried oy by those companies. International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS), and specifically International Accounting Standard (IAS) 37 covers how companies should recognize, measure and disclose its provisions and contingent liabilities. However, there is always the question as to whether this specific accounting standard is appropriate to cover all possible cases and outcomes in the recognition and measurement, and if the minimal information required to be disclosed is sufficient to the users to have a better understanding of all obligations included in the financial statements. In that sense, chapter 1 will cover all mining regulations and applicable accounting standards. Chapter 2 will approach the main problem in this thesis considering the hypothesis of whether the current standards are adequate and sufficient, and if the impact in the financial statements taken as a whole is material. Chapter 3 will explain the tool used to prove the hypothesis from a qualitative and quantitative perspective, through surveys and in-depth interviews. Chapters 4 and 5 will analyze the results of such tools and will complement with an analysis of a practical study case. Finally, conclusions and recommendations will be presented in a final section.
