In this monograph methods for evaluating diurnal coastal avifauna, according to their type of habitat, within the department of Lima, are proposed. Bibliographic information was collected from 15 habitats, both natural (3 marine and 6 terrestrial) and anthropic (6 terrestrial). Twelve methods for evaluating diurnal birds were selected, according to the type of habitat they prefer, and the emphasis was placed on the information they provide as well as on their level of efficiency. These were subdivided into three groups: (1) methods for evaluating bird populations or communities; (2) methods for evaluating individuals and studying the species’ biology; (3) mixed methods, with characteristics of the other two groups. In order to evaluate the compatibility of the methods with the type of habitat, 6 characteristics were taken into account: soil cover, vegetation stratum, vegetation density, slope, ease of movement, and site width (to facilitate visibility). It is concluded that the most adequate methods to describe bird populations or communities, in most coastal habitats in Lima, are mainly transects and point counts; followed by intensive search, as a complement; and in a lesser percentage, species lists. Direct counts are applied for very particular cases of individual clusters, and direct or indirect observations are complementary for all other cases. Methods for evaluating individuals and mixed methods depend more on specific study aims and can be applied in all ecosystems, with some exceptions only for mist-netting.
