Abiotic factors and specie's tolerances to these factors determine the composition and distribution of Plant Communities. On the islands of the Tumbes Mangroves National Sanctuary, by determining flood frequency of specific areas, the interaction of tidal streams with local topography controls species distribution and hence the composition and spatial pattern formation of different plant communities. To study this relationship, exploratory statistical analysis was performed on collected field data of floristic composition, vegetative cover by species and local topography. Based on the results of this analysis, plant communities were identified and their internal composition characterized. To evaluate changes in species' composition and abundance, rank- abundance curves and diversity indexes were used. NMDS and cluster classification were used to determine correlation between vegetative cover by species and local topography. Finally, the significance of community grouping was obtained and studied with analysis of similarity (ANOS 1M). Five plant communities were identified and characterized: (1) Mangroves, (2) Low Mangroves, (3) Halophytic vegetation, (4) Shrubland and (5) Grasslands. The results showed a strong correlation between species distribution and local topography (m). For each community, a preliminary mean terrain elevation was determined (0.74 m, 0.83 m, 0.94 m, 1.76 m, 1.54 m, respectively). This information also allowed inferring the effect of flood frequency on each plant cornmunity.
